Merchants House: Wapping Wharf

Situated in the serene yet lively Bristol harbourside, the Merchants House office in Wapping Wharf has undergone a remarkable transformation into a striking workspace perfect to accommodate the needs of a local creative business.

The brief

The landlord sought a “plug and play” concept, transforming the office into a collaborative and flexible space. With limited space we needed to make it work hard, utilising modern techniques such as bench desking, to save space and help facilitate effective work-based collaborations and discussions. 

Unlocking the potential of space

It was crucial to maximise the functionality of each area. We created versatile zones for easy modification in order to suit a variety of different day-to-day tasks, or even accommodate future tenants’ needs. We constructed a meeting pod instead of a conventional boardroom to protect the existing ventilation system, whilst providing a private, acoustically sound space. This can be relocated for future use, providing reassuring ROI for the landlord.

The desk bank has been strategically positioned to offer the best views of the city, while an island within the breakout area faces the captivating scenery of Wapping Wharf. This thoughtful arrangement promotes a strong connection between the workspace and the local environment.

Design and aesthetics

Nestled in the heart of the Bristol harbourside, it felt pertinent to reflect the local area in our final interiors. The warm, earthy, tonal palette used in the design was inspired by the Wapping Wharf area and biophilic principles, incorporating natural, raw materials wherever possible to support colleague wellbeing. We added artwork of Bristol landmark, The Clifton Suspension Bridge, painted by a local artist, as a finishing touch. 

To ensure a premium feel to the space we used distinctive vinyl flooring with an eye-catching colour scheme and painted the exposed soffit ceiling, with all materials chosen carefully to complement the design-led furniture.
