Forever looking for ways to drown out the office din? Noisy desk neighbour killing your productivity? It turns out that the background noise driving you crazy can actually be used to your advantage!

Research conducted by Edith Cowan University reveals that nuisance noise can actually make us see, hear and feel better.
Known as stochastic resonance, research has shown that this phenomenon can improve crucial brain functions including perception, decision making and being able to consider different perspectives. It is true that too much noise can unsuprisingly have a negative impact on our performance but finding that sweet spot can pay dividends.

Time for a coffee run?

The human brain constantly seeks out novelty and working in a new location actually stimulates the brain to create new neural pathways and triggers the release of dopamine which increases motivation. Finding a new location to power through your to do list excercises your brain’s neuroplasticity and encourages your brain to think about things in new ways. This can be as straightforward as working from the coffee shop around the corner but as organisations recognise the potential of this ‘novel’ space, we’re designing an increasing amount of breakout, huddle and collision spaces within offices themselves. By doing this, businesses are able to harness all of the benefits of open plan working but also maximising the opportunity for staff to work flexibly and in a way that allows their team to maximise their productivity by working in ways that suit them.

Intentions matter

It is clear that the environment in which you undertake particular tasks has a significant impact on productivity but only when you are clear on your intentions and what you want to achieve by being in a different environment. Being clear with yourself about your reasons for working in a different environment, coupled with the dopamine hit your brain receives from working in a new, ‘novel’, space sets you up to rip through that list of outstanding to-dos.

Workspace that wows

As research probes the impact of the work environment on productivity, insights are revealing just how important it is to go above and beyond to create a working environment that really delivers for the people that work in it. A recent study has shown that 73% of UK office workers would consider leaving an employer if they failed to provide a suitable workplace environment that inspires them to fulfil their role. Shockingly, it is taking a while for people to address the shortcomings of their workspace, with 83% of UK adults considering their workplace to be an “unpleasant” environment, with many citing uncomfortable temperatures, lack of natural light, unpleasant smells, damp and mould, poor ventilation and even vermin and insects among their complaints.

At Kerr Office Group, not only do we understand how to create visually stunning and exciting workspace designs, we know how to make them work for your organisation and your people to drive tangible business growth. Our workplace strategy and change management process means that we work closely with your business to fully understand the requirements of your people and the wider business, and collaborate with your team to create a first-class space where people love to work.
